🚨 Safety Updates

A Queensland construction safety alert has been issued after a fatal retaining wall collapse at a Brisbane site in 2025. WorkSafe warns excavations near retaining walls can destabilise structures without proper geotechnical assessment, temporary supports and exclusion zones. Builders and contractors are urged to strengthen excavation planning, risk controls and emergency procedures.

WorkSafe Victoria has issued a safety alert after a construction worker fell 3.5 metres into a piling hole in northern Victoria and remained trapped overnight. The incident highlights serious excavation and piling risks, prompting renewed focus on engineered covers, guardrails, emergency rescue plans, and safer work systems across construction sites.

âś’ Headlines & Industry

Fair Work Commission General Manager Murray Furlong has appointed Michael Crosby as Administrator of the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU) Construction and General Division.  He replaces Mark Irving KC, who resigned just 20 months into his role.

APA Group has partnered with Worley in Australia on a three-year agreement to deliver engineering and design for gas transmission and storage projects. The construction-focused collaboration will support pipeline and storage infrastructure delivery nationally, improving execution efficiency, digital design consistency, and accelerating energy security and network expansion works.

Brisbane 2032 Olympic planning in Queensland, Australia has shifted toward seven new major venue builds, diverging from IOC “New Norm” principles favouring reuse. Critics argue this increases construction intensity, carbon impacts, and long-term asset risk, raising concerns about procurement control, fast-tracked approvals, and reduced oversight in large-scale Olympic infrastructure delivery.

🏗️ Projects

ACT

Main construction has begun in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Australia on the $107.25 million William Hovell Drive duplication. Works will upgrade 4.5 km between John Gorton Drive and Drake Brockman Drive, adding lanes, intersections, and active transport paths to improve capacity, safety, and connectivity for Canberra’s northwestern growth corridor.

NSW

Catholic Healthcare has secured planning approval for a $600m seniors living and aged care precinct in Maroubra, NSW. Designed by GroupGSA, the redevelopment will transform a former bowling club into four buildings delivering 99 dwellings and care beds, integrated wellness facilities, public links, and landscaped communal spaces near the coast.

QLD

Queensland’s $1 billion Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade has reached a major milestone, with detailed Stage 1 designs released. The project includes rail duplication, level crossing removals, station upgrades and expanded park-and-ride facilities. Construction is underway, improving passenger capacity, freight efficiency and long-term Sunshine Coast transport connectivity.

TAS

Tasmania’s $3.3 million Kings Meadows interchange upgrade will begin this week, improving safety and traffic flow on the Midland Highway. Works include extending the south-bound off-ramp, installing smart traffic lights and upgrading intersections. Jointly funded by federal and state governments, the project aims to reduce congestion and rear-end crashes.

Gamuda’s proposed Weasel Solar Farm (200MW) and Cellars Hill Wind Farm (341MW) in Tasmania have secured Australian Government Capacity Investment Scheme support, providing a 15-year revenue safety net. Construction is expected from 2027–2028, delivering co-located solar, wind and transmission-linked generation under a de-risked, large-scale renewable energy development model.

VIC

Victoria has approved the 26,000-hectare Warracknabeal Energy Park, paving the way for the southern hemisphere’s largest wind farm. The renewable project includes up to 219 turbines and major civil works, transmission infrastructure and logistics operations. Community concerns centre on construction traffic, rural road impacts and environmental management before federal approval.

In Victoria, Birchmore Group has lodged plans for the Station Square hotel and retail development at Wodonga’s Junction Place precinct. The 160-room hotel will include retail, hospitality and wellness spaces. Construction will deliver significant regional building activity, supporting precinct activation, tourism infrastructure and future commercial and event capacity growth.

🧰 Construction Au Other

The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) supports proposed Rail Safety National Law reforms, with a focus on improving national interoperability across Australia’s rail network. In Australia, the reforms target consistent standards, reduced duplication and improved rail system efficiency. Success will depend on coordinated implementation, governance and alignment of technical and operational frameworks.

Consult Australia has warned that billions of dollars in infrastructure cost overruns are being locked in long before projects reach the construction phase, pointing to a systemic failure in how major public works are planned and brought to market.

Master Builders Australia welcomes the opportunity to respond to the National Competition Council’s Interim Findings on the Review of Australia’s Mutual Recognition Schemes for Workers.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

Researchers have developed a multi-material 3D-printed concrete using alternating mortar and polyurethane layers inspired by deep-sea sponge structures. The composite significantly improves fracture toughness and ductility while maintaining strength, enabling more resilient construction components and advancing additive manufacturing toward faster, more durable infrastructure applications with improved crack resistance and performance.

August Robotics has raised $30 million in Series B funding led by Big Pi Ventures, with support from Blackbird Ventures, Skip Capital and others, to scale autonomous construction robotics. The company develops AI-driven fleet robotics for construction, infrastructure and data centres, including floor-marking systems and drilling robots for large-scale industrial sites.

Procore expanded its artificial intelligence capabilities May 21, introducing a suite of AI agents powered by embedded intelligence from recent acquisition Datagrid into its construction management platform.

🌏 Around the World

In global water infrastructure, RSE CEO Stephen Slessor highlights growing use of modular water and wastewater treatment systems, enabling faster factory-built delivery. Supported by British Water in the UK, the approach improves scalability, reduces construction time, and enhances project certainty, offering utilities a more efficient alternative to traditional plant delivery methods.

Gulf region construction sector is adapting to Hormuz supply chain disruption, with GCC nations accelerating local manufacturing initiatives and reviving the 2,100km GCC Railway. Projects like Etihad Rail aim to improve overland freight for materials and equipment. Digital twins and 4D scheduling are enhancing construction resilience and project delivery efficiency.

Canada’s Ontario Line rail project in Toronto highlights major infrastructure delivery challenges, with costs rising from ~$10.9bn to ~$27bn CAD and delays pushing completion into the 2030s. Construction includes 15.6km of mixed underground, elevated and surface rail using tunnel boring machines and piled guideways, amid governance and budget concerns.

đź“– Miscellaneous

Construction sector driving national job ad growth in Australia, with SEEK reporting 0.2% m/m overall job ad increase in April 2026. Construction-related roles rose 1.4% m/m, contributing strongly alongside Trades and Engineering. SA and NT showed fastest growth due to infrastructure demand, while applications per job ad remained historically high.

👷‍♀️ Tradies and Resource

Australia’s labour market is being reshaped by a surprising new workforce trend. Construction workers, teenagers and casual employees are now leading the country’s strongest wage gains, while traditional white-collar sectors begin to lose momentum.
