THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES
🚨 Safety Updates
Safe Work Australia has opened consultation on its Asbestos Framework Review to strengthen model WHS laws and prioritise asbestos removal. Supporting the Asbestos National Strategic Plan, the review seeks industry feedback to improve regulations, codes and guidance. Submissions close 26 April 2026, with recommendations due late 2026.
The Workplace Health & Safety Show returns to Brisbane on March 25–26, positioning the city as a hub for safety innovation. Featuring 130 exhibitors and 40+ CPD sessions, the 2026 event will address new regulations, psychosocial risks and compliance, offering practical tools for WHS and HR leaders.
Construction safety requires ongoing attention. One-time training is insufficient, as complacency, fatigue, and human error drive accidents. Companies must implement continuous safety programs, refresher courses, daily check-ins, and practical PPE guidance. Encouraging open communication and reinforcing protocols daily helps protect workers, reduce injuries, and build a lasting culture of safety.

The $472M Cairns Water Security Stage 1 project has surpassed one million work hours, with 25 km of a 30 km network installed. Funded by federal and state governments with Cairns Council, it will secure Cairns’ water future, supporting resilience, sustainable growth, local jobs, and long-term drinking water reliability by mid-2026.
TAS
West Tamar Council opposes deferring the Ti-Tree Bend sewage plant upgrade, warning delays will restrict housing, population growth, and sustainable water services in Legana. Councillors stress the project is critical for public health, infrastructure compliance, and regional development, urging the Tasmanian Economic Regulator to prioritise the upgrade in the next pricing period.
The Tasmanian Government and Launceston Council will construct a $35 million, 4,000 m² convention centre near Peppers Silo Hotel, supporting 1,000 delegates, 300 car parks, and future hotel expansion. The project, part of the Riverbend Master Plan, includes riverbank remediation and boardwalk works, boosting construction activity and regional economic development.
VIC
Stage 1 of the $7 billion Melbourne Airport Rail Link will commence at Sunshine, delivering major track realignments and enabling works to untangle metro, regional and freight lines. The Sunshine Super Hub upgrade unlocks future airport services, Melton electrification and expanded capacity, with early construction and pipeline relocation now underway.
🧰 Construction Au Other
Cement, Concrete & Aggregates Australia urges a coordinated Heavy Construction Materials Plan for NSW as Sydney–Newcastle High-Speed Rail progresses. With 500 million tonnes of quarry products needed by 2036, planning supply, logistics, and demand is critical to avoid bottlenecks, control costs, and ensure timely delivery of major infrastructure projects.
🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology
Lift operations in construction are high-risk due to blind spots and limited visibility. AI-enabled camera systems enhance safety by providing real-time multi-angle views, monitoring exclusion zones, improving team coordination, detecting early hazards, and supporting shift handovers. These technologies reduce accidents, prevent delays, and streamline decision-making on busy worksites.
Flo Mobility develops AI-powered autonomous material movers for construction, improving safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Designed and built in-house, these electric robots reduce manual labour, cut costs, and save time. Already deployed across major projects in India and the Middle East, Flo plans global expansion and new robots for wall finishing and painting.
🌱 Sustainability & Environment
Sustainability in building projects often fails because decisions are locked in too early, creating an “invisible knot.” Performance metrics focus on optimization after systems are fixed, but true sustainability requires integrating technical, ecological, and spatial systems from the start, ensuring coherence, adaptability, and self-regulation over a project’s lifetime.
The Minnesota-based Deconstruction Academy teaches contractors and students how to dismantle buildings and salvage materials like doors, sinks, and cabinets. By reclaiming up to 85% of materials, the program reduces construction waste, lowers supply costs, and helps create a skilled workforce that mitigates the environmental impact of the building industry.
🌏 Around the World
Arada has appointed UAE-based ECC to deliver the $421m main construction contract for W Residences at Dubai Harbour. The 40-storey, 490-unit waterfront development includes luxury apartments, duplexes, penthouses, smart home technology, and LEED Silver certification. Amenities feature pools, fitness, cinema, co-working spaces, and panoramic views of Dubai’s skyline.
Ayesa is advancing tunnelling projects using 3D ground modelling for Silvertown Tunnel, London, and Porto Metro, Portugal. By integrating Leapfrog, Plaxis, and OpenTunnel, engineers optimise design, reduce risks, and improve collaboration. The firm emphasises retraining teams, combining technology with skilled personnel to enhance productivity, decision-making, and underground infrastructure delivery.
Jacobs secured the master services agreement for The Gate, part of the $35 B Coastal Texas Project. The Bolivar Roads Gate System will protect six million residents and $800 B in assets, integrating advanced sector gates and digital modelling. The project strengthens Gulf Coast resilience while maintaining Houston Ship Channel operations.
📖 Miscellaneous
Extreme climate events—droughts, floods, heatwaves—are pushing rivers past ecological tipping points, harming biodiversity and disrupting communities. Impacts often cascade and compound, worsened by pollution and water use. Experts call for proactive, catchment-scale solutions, combining habitat restoration, connectivity, and engineered refuges, to build resilient river ecosystems for a hotter, more volatile future.
WA’s population is on track to hit four million by 2043, according to new modelling which warns the resources-driven migration boom could be ‘constrained, uneven or short-lived’ by housing shortages.
👷♀️ Tradies and Resource
Workers on Melbourne’s Suburban Rail Loop East will earn up to $360,000 annually under a landmark deal between the Australian Workers Union, CPB and Acciona. Covering 300 tunnellers, the agreement sets a new civil construction pay benchmark, with further rises pending negotiations.
Master Builders Australia CEO Will Frogley says building demand is outpacing supply, urging people aged 21 and over to pursue construction careers. He highlighted strong pay and job security, noting trades offer protection from AI disruption and represent a major missed workforce opportunity.
Dr Gretchen Gagel founded the International Institute for Women in Construction to advance female leadership globally. With four decades in the industry, she focuses on research, storytelling, convenings, and funding to attract, develop, and retain women. Women comprise 12–14% overall, 2–4% in trades, highlighting the need for change.
