QLD

A new $100 million luxury beachfront residential tower called “Coral” is planned for Palm Beach on the Gold Coast, with a development application to be lodged for a nine-level, 12-residence project designed by Koichi Takada Architects. The 814sqm absolute beachfront site was acquired by GRAYA for $23.5 million, with construction expected to deliver high-end oceanfront apartments and premium coastal living.

Brisbane developments include a range of major construction and infrastructure proposals, such as a $2.1 million Kangaroo Point Cliffs zipline, new office and retail towers in Fortitude Valley and Brisbane Airport, retirement and residential projects across The Gap and Stones Corner, and retail upgrades at Toombul and Wynnum Plaza. These works reflect continued urban growth, precinct renewal, and mixed-use redevelopment across the city.

SA

Adelaide CBD and Kent Town are experiencing strong construction activity, with multiple new high-rise apartment projects underway, including Franklin Tower (23 levels) and MONDE. Driven by infrastructure investment and urban renewal, developers are building higher-density residential towers close to transport, education and employment hubs to meet growing demand for inner-city living.

Concrete production for the $15.4 billion River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) tunnel project has reached a major milestone, with 1,000 precast tunnel segments completed at Waterloo Corner in South Australia. The facility will produce over 55,000 segments, supporting local jobs and large-scale tunnelling using tunnel boring machines as part of Adelaide’s North–South Corridor upgrade.

VIC

Early works have started on Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1, with new stations at Tottenham and Albion designed to support a $4.1 billion upgrade across the Sunbury Line corridor. The project includes track duplication, junction upgrades and station rebuilds, enabling up to 1,000 trains per day and improving capacity, accessibility and connectivity in Melbourne’s west ahead of completion in 2030.

Victoria has approved the Environment Effects Statement for the Warracknabeal Energy Park, a 219-turbine wind farm that would generate around 1.5GW of renewable energy—enough to power up to 1.2 million homes. The project, expected to create about 950 construction jobs, still requires further state and federal approvals before construction can proceed.

A $520 million mixed-use development called “Kew Village” has been approved for Kew Junction in Melbourne, transforming an existing car park and supermarket site into a four-building precinct. Designed by Wardle with landscape by Oculus, the project includes up to 18-storey residential towers, 194 dwellings, retail and public open space, with construction expected to begin in late 2027.

Construction on the Western Highway Upgrade between Buangor and Ararat will begin before year-end after a $1.17 billion funding boost from the Albanese and Allan Labor Governments. The project, delivered by BMD Constructions, will duplicate 12km of highway, improving safety, capacity, freight efficiency, and regional connectivity in western Victoria.

WA

WA Treasurer Rita Saffioti says there is “no doubt pressure” on the $217.5 million Perth Park racetrack budget amid rising construction costs and scope concerns. The project has faced public backlash. A Crown land swap delivered 3.7 hectares worth $36 million to support the precinct’s delivery.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

A new Adelaide University and Flinders University study finds Australian construction has become more resilient to disruption, including COVID-19 and supply chain shocks, largely through rapid adoption of digital tools, collaboration and sustainability practices. While labour shortages and supply risks remain, researchers say digitalisation and improved risk management are accelerating industry transformation and long-term adaptability.

Xpanner, a construction technology firm specialising in AI-powered automation and robotics, has raised an $18 million Series B bridge round led by Korea Investment Partners with KB Investment participating. The funding will scale its subscription-based “Automation-as-a-Service” model across the U.S. construction sector. The company delivers retrofit automation for equipment like piling and material handling, targeting labour shortages and productivity gaps on major infrastructure and energy projects.

All3, a European construction robotics startup, has raised $25 million in seed funding led by RTP Global, with SuperSeed and other investors participating. The company is developing an end-to-end automated construction system combining AI design software, robotic factories and an autonomous legged robot called All3 Mantis. It targets up to 50% faster delivery, 30% cost savings and reduced embodied carbon across large-scale housing and infrastructure projects.

🌏 Around the World

Major sustainable infrastructure projects worldwide are reshaping transport, energy and urban development by reducing emissions and improving efficiency. Examples include Sydney Metro Northwest, Shanghai Metro, the Hornsea offshore wind farm, the Itaipu hydropower dam, and the new Eni headquarters in Milan, all demonstrating how large-scale infrastructure can combine economic growth with environmental sustainability.

US engineering giant Bechtel has created a new EPC Transformation leadership role to accelerate the use of AI, robotics and digital tools across major infrastructure projects. The company is trialling autonomous earthmoving equipment and AI-enabled project controls to improve efficiency, reduce rework and speed up delivery, while maintaining human oversight as a core part of construction operations.

📖 Miscellaneous

Construction of Sydney’s Barangaroo Metro unearthed Australia’s oldest colonial-era boat, dating from 1790–1830. Maritime archaeologists are restoring the vessel using traditional preservation methods before its planned 2027 display at the Australian National Maritime Museum. The discovery also revealed hundreds of artefacts, offering rare insight into everyday life in early colonial Sydney.

A $2.1 million Brisbane River Icons project has received Queensland Government backing, proposing a dual-accessible zipline between Kangaroo Point Cliffs and the Brisbane CBD. The tourism infrastructure includes a flying fox river crossing and supporting river transport links, forming part of the Destination 2045 strategy and aiming to boost inner-city tourism ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.

👷‍♀️ Tradies and Resource

Australia’s construction industry has warned proposed federal budget changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax could reduce housing supply and slow progress toward the nation’s 1.2 million homes target. Builders say rising material costs, labour shortages and limited apprenticeship support are already straining the sector, with skilled migration needed to bridge workforce gaps.

Attracting Young Women to Careers in ConstructionAs Australia’s construction industry faces a critical skills shortage, new research from Adelaide University shows how the industry can better support women and therefore strengthen the future workforce.

Adelaide University research warns Australia’s construction workforce shortage will worsen unless the industry improves workplace culture, flexibility and career pathways to attract more women. With women making up just 13% of the sector and 3% of trade roles, researchers argue better conditions, clearer progression and inclusive practices are essential to addressing the estimated 61% skills shortfall and meeting infrastructure demand.
