A tradie has died at work after he suffered a fatal electric shock while performing building maintenance. Emergency services rushed to a business on Billington Place at Emu Plains, in Sydney’s west, about 1.30pm on Friday.
âś’ Headlines & Industry
Infrastructure Australia’s 2026 Priority List identifies 68 projects across transport, water, energy, communications, and social infrastructure. Focus areas include freight productivity, urban transport, port connectivity, water security, and the clean energy transition. The list guides federal investment decisions, addressing population growth, climate resilience, and long-term economic and livability needs nationwide.
Transport Australia, formerly Roads Australia, has launched, calling for a major shift in funding and managing the national transport system. Its report highlights five billion hours of annual travel, $189 billion GDP contribution, and rising network pressures. It advocates integrated planning, smarter operations, and targeted upgrades to boost productivity, reduce travel time, and support sustainable, connected transport across Australia.
Austrade is briefing Australian contractors on a USD $2 billion Pacific infrastructure pipeline, covering transport, energy, water, social, and digital projects. Roadshows in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne target civil works firms, engineers, and suppliers capable of $10 million+ projects, offering early visibility, procurement guidance, and in-market support. A new Pacific infrastructure website will centralise opportunities for planning, tendering, and business matching.
Eight tunnel boring machines for Victoria’s Suburban Rail Loop have been named after inspiring women from diverse fields, honouring their contributions. With tunnelling set to begin this year, the project already employs over 3,000 people. When complete in 2035, the SRL will cut travel times, ease congestion, and improve access to education and jobs.

NSW
ALDI Foods Pty Ltd has received approval for a $1.15 billion automated distribution centre in Bradfield. The 24/7 high-bay facility on a 22.1-hectare site will serve over 200 stores, generate 3,728 construction and 585 operational jobs, and relies on supporting infrastructure delivery including roads, stormwater and utilities.
Octopus Australia has begun construction of the AUS$900 million Blind Creek solar and battery project in Bungendore, NSW. The 300 MW solar farm paired with a 243 MW/486 MWh battery will provide firmed renewable electricity, support around 300 construction jobs, and strengthen grid reliability. Full operation is expected by 2028.
QLD
MITEZ warns that investment in the Mount Isa–Townsville transport corridor is critical for expanding Australia’s minerals sector and strengthening sovereign manufacturing, expressing concern after key rail and freight upgrades were removed from Infrastructure Australia’s national priority list.
Queensland is prioritising water as critical economic infrastructure, addressing population growth, climate variability, and past underinvestment. Minister Ann Leahy emphasises secure, affordable, and resilient water supply for cities, regions, and remote communities. Initiatives include regional upgrades, South East Queensland planning, council support, technology adoption, and disaster resilience programs, positioning water as a driver of productivity, development, and long-term state growth.
Stage One of Florian Rise in Rochedale, Brisbane, has launched, introducing 62 apartments across two buildings with completion expected by December 2027. Developed by Pask with RCQ Construction, the 188-apartment masterplanned community offers two- to four-bedroom residences, wellness-focused amenities, landscaped gardens, and a clubhouse. Florian Rise provides low-maintenance, modern apartment living while maintaining strong local community connection in South East Queensland.

The North West Transmission Upgrades Project – Palmerston to Hampshire Section has received planning approval from the Tasmanian Planning Commission. The permit covers transmission lines from Palmerston to Hampshire, including Sheffield, Burnie, East Cam, Heybridge spur, the Hampshire substation, and ancillary facilities, supporting Tasmania’s electricity network upgrades and regional power reliability.
VIC
Hanwha Defence Australia has begun Stage 2 fit-out of its H-ACE facilities in Victoria. The $225 million expansion, delivered with Kapitol and Conscia, adds a second production hall, EMI/EMC chamber, heavy washdown, and storage, supporting parallel production of Huntsman and Redback vehicles for the Australian Army under Land 400 Phase 3.
Community consultation has opened on new greenfield plans in Melbourne that could deliver more than 9,000 homes and 1,800 jobs across Merrimu near Bacchus Marsh and the Cardinia Creek South expansion, alongside new roads, schools, parks, retail and community infrastructure.
Plans for the Croskell Employment Precinct near Cranbourne in Melbourne have been approved, unlocking about 6,800 jobs and 600 homes. The development will support manufacturing, logistics and clean-tech industries while delivering parks, sports reserves, transport upgrades and new connections between Cranbourne East and Clyde North communities.
A multidisciplinary team led by Durbach Block Jaggers with Architecture Associates and landscape architecture practice Openwork has won a competition to design a new $60 million library and public piazza in Melbourne’s Coburg.
Coliban Water has awarded Filtec International a contract to upgrade the Bendigo Recycled Water Factory in Bendigo. The project will increase Class A recycled water production from 3ML to 10ML per day, helping irrigate parks and sports fields while reducing pressure on drinking water supplies.

Researchers at University of CĂłrdoba have developed pervious paving blocks made entirely from recycled mollusk shells, mining waste and fly ash. The material replaces traditional cement and aggregates, offering a lower-carbon construction alternative while improving drainage and supporting circular economy goals by turning industrial and seafood waste into infrastructure materials.
The Australian construction sector is exploring carbon-negative buildings by using carbon-sequestering materials like cross-laminated timber and green concrete, alongside efficient on-site methods. Australian offshore engineering company Worley has been selected to provide front‑end engineering design (FEED) and procurement services for Chevron’s Aphrodite development offshore Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Miami International Airport will start a $1 billion expansion of Concourse D in 2027, adding 17 gates, three floors, enhanced baggage systems, and retail. The project aims for LEED Silver and Envision certifications, with completion by 2030, improving capacity for regional and narrow-body aircraft and modernising customer facilities.
