Construction of the proposed 91-storey Gold Coast Trump Tower has stalled after a breakdown between Altus Property Group and the Trump Organisation. Despite the branding dispute, Altus says the $1.5 billion luxury high-rise project will proceed with another international hotel partner, keeping plans alive for Australia’s tallest residential and hotel development.
Snowy Hydro 2.0 continues to face major construction and delivery challenges, with estimated project costs reportedly surging to $42 billion from the original $2 billion forecast. Complex tunnelling conditions, contract changes and ongoing delays have intensified scrutiny over governance, procurement and cost transparency on Australia’s largest renewable infrastructure project.
🏗️ Projects
ACT
The Federal Budget allocates significant construction funding for the ACT, including $50 million to duplicate Drake Brockman Drive and further investment in Sydney–Canberra rail upgrades, alongside major capital works for housing and community infrastructure. The RSPCA’s new Pialligo animal welfare campus also receives $30 million, supporting completion of a purpose-built facility and freeing up existing land for potential future housing development.
NSW
A $100 million funding package has been agreed to upgrade the 321km Sydney–Canberra rail line, jointly funded by the Federal Government, NSW and ACT. The works include track improvements, upgraded level crossings, station upgrades and early design for faster, more reliable services, with a focus on improving alignment and enabling future construction of passing loops and higher-speed rail capacity.
Two major construction consortia—Seymour Whyte and Gamuda—have been shortlisted to deliver urgent stabilisation works on Mitchells Causeway along the Great Western Highway after significant cracking forced its closure. Both engineering solutions are now being developed in parallel to accelerate design finalisation and fast-track reconstruction, with early site works already underway to support major construction once a preferred solution is selected.
QLD
Egis has been appointed preferred signalling design delivery team for the Cross River Rail North package in Brisbane, adding to its South package role on the 10.2km project. The works support construction of twin tunnels, four new underground stations and upgraded rail capacity to reduce congestion and enable higher-frequency services ahead of the 2032 Olympics.
TAS
A $150 million Cadbury Chocolate Experience in Tasmania has been approved, with construction expected to begin soon on a landmark tourism facility at Claremont near Hobart. The project, to be built by Simon Currant and Associates with Cumulus Studio Architects, will include immersive themed spaces and is expected to generate major construction activity, supporting hundreds of jobs during the build phase and ongoing operations.
VIC
The Federal and Victorian Governments have committed an additional $45 million to progress Stage 2 of the Donnybrook Road Upgrade in Melbourne’s outer north. The works include road duplication, a second Hume Freeway bridge, intersection upgrades and shared cycling paths, supporting safer traffic flow and future growth across the rapidly expanding corridor.
A downsized $388 million Gelliondale wind project in Gippsland has received Victorian planning approval for 13 turbines and supporting transmission infrastructure, marking a renewed push for construction after earlier rejection and redesign. The project is now progressing toward federal environmental approval and early works, although local opposition and ongoing neighbour agreements remain a challenge ahead of full construction commencement.
A $125 million industrial subdivision at Lara, near Geelong, is set to boost construction, logistics and manufacturing activity across Victoria’s growing freight corridor. The Kinetic Lara project will deliver industrial lots, warehouses and supporting infrastructure, responding to strong demand for large-scale industrial land near the Port of Geelong, Avalon Airport and Melbourne transport links.
WA
Andrew Forrest’s $70 million Ningaloo Lighthouse Resort in Exmouth has secured final development approval after years of redesign and environmental review. The scaled-back eco-tourism project includes villas, hospitality facilities and heritage upgrades, with construction expected to provide a major economic and infrastructure boost for the cyclone-impacted regional town.
The WA Government has launched a $2 million housing pattern book initiative to accelerate construction of medium-density homes in established suburbs. Led by Government Architect WA, the program will provide pre-approved, architect-designed housing templates to streamline approvals, reduce build costs and support faster infill development near transport and Metronet stations.
Construction has commenced on an $11.7 million Water Corporation-led project to expand Halls Creek’s borefield in WA’s Kimberley region, delivered by builder Water Corporation in partnership with the Federal and WA Governments. The works include drilling four new production bores and installing around three kilometres of pipeline to improve climate-resilient drinking water supply for the remote community, with completion expected within 12 months.
Western Australia has approved 10 new utility-scale renewable energy projects under the Federal Capacity Investment Scheme, adding 1.886 GW of generation and 3.683 GWh of battery storage. The developments, including major wind and solar farms, are expected to boost construction activity, support over 7,000 jobs, and strengthen grid reliability as ageing fossil fuel assets retire.
🧰 Construction Au Other
Global engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald has entered into an agreement to acquire Leed Engineering & Construction, which has delivered projects in metropolitan, regional and remote areas of Australia.
🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology
Australian safety technology company The Buddie System is gaining traction across the construction and mining sectors with its wireless crane safety alert device. Designed to prevent communication failures between Dogmen and crane operators, the system is expanding nationally and internationally, following recognition as a finalist in the 2026 WorkSafe Awards.
NASA-inspired Freeform 3D printing, developed by Branch Technology with NASA support, is now being applied to construction on Earth, producing lightweight skeletal building structures with minimal waste and fast assembly. The system replaces traditional layered concrete printing with geometry-based frameworks, aiming to reduce labour demand, material waste, and construction time while shifting building delivery toward industrialised, modular assembly methods.
The HVAC and building services sector showcased at Melbourne’s ARBS event is increasingly positioned as a key driver of construction electrification and decarbonisation. Despite a major skills shortage, the industry is seen as critical to reducing building emissions, with growing momentum around energy efficiency, electrification of systems, and advanced building management technologies supporting Australia’s net zero construction transition.
🌱 Sustainability & Environment
A new anti-sag 100% silane water repellent, MCI®-2018 X V/O, has been launched to improve corrosion protection for vertical and overhead concrete structures such as bridges and parking facilities. Designed for easier spray application and reduced runoff, the product aims to extend concrete durability and reduce maintenance demands in civil infrastructure works.

The event includes CPD seminars, networking, and demonstrations highlighting carbon capture, design flexibility, and reduced material waste for architects and specifiers globally industry.
đź“– Miscellaneous
Australia’s housing affordability crisis cannot be solved without fixing construction capacity. The federal budget must prioritise workforce shortages, productivity and project viability to increase housing supply at scale. Faster skills recognition, lower-cost construction methods and reduced delivery inefficiencies are critical to unlocking stalled projects, easing rental pressure and meeting national housing targets.
The 2026 federal budget delivers limited construction and infrastructure benefits for regional Australia, despite growing demand for housing and services. While $500 million has been allocated for regional housing infrastructure, concerns remain around workforce shortages, reduced rental supply, stalled Inland Rail expansion and insufficient long-term investment needed to support regional growth and development.
The Federal Budget has committed $42.7 million over four years to provide free public read-only access to Australian Standards referenced in legislation, removing cost barriers for architects and construction professionals. The move is expected to improve compliance efficiency, reduce project costs, and support productivity across the building and infrastructure sectors.
👷‍♀️ Tradies and Resource
The Coalition has proposed linking net overseas migration to annual housing completions, arguing population growth must align with construction capacity and infrastructure delivery. The policy also includes a $5 billion Housing Infrastructure Fund and planned cuts to the National Construction Code, aimed at reducing building costs and accelerating new housing supply across Australia.
