Jacinta Allan has reshuffled Victoria’s cabinet after three senior ministers resigned. New ministers include Luba Grigorovitch, Paul Edbrooke, Michaela Settle and Paul Hamer, with criticism over Grigorovitch’s links to John Setka.

At a CFMEU inquiry, Nigel Hadgkiss criticised Annastacia Palaszczuk for scrapping Queensland’s building code, urging a stronger replacement with an independent regulator to boost productivity, safety and accountability across the construction sector.

Queensland councils are warning of major construction and infrastructure funding gaps as the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program ends in June, with the LGAQ saying projects like roads, parks and community facilities face delays, job losses and reduced delivery without continued federal support.

Construction costs in the Northern Territory have surged up to 40%, driven by fuel price spikes impacting materials and transport. Jim Eadie warned builders are avoiding fixed-price contracts, threatening housing and commercial projects as industry calls grow for government intervention.

Brisbane Airport plans two new hotel developments near the International Terminal and Skygate to meet rising demand ahead of the Olympics. With existing hotels at capacity, the projects will boost construction activity and deliver critical accommodation infrastructure to support future passenger growth.

WA

Construction has begun on the Muchea Battery in Western Australia, led by Neoen with contractors UGL and Tesla Energy. Bulk civil works are underway, advancing one of Australia’s first six-hour grid-scale battery storage projects.

The Western Australia government is investing AU$6 million to establish a new capability-building program aimed at increasing the community housing sector in the state. The initiative is designed to increase the capacity of providers to deliver and manage more social and affordable housing projects.

Primepoint raised $10M seed funding led by Navitas Capital and Penny Jar Capital to expand its AI construction platform that links drawings, schedules, specifications and documents using a knowledge graph reducing errors rework and manual coordination while improving visibility for contractors as it scales adoption across large commercial projects globally.

Construction sustainability barriers can be overcome by treating carbon as a cost driver, improving early design decisions, and setting clear procurement rules. Key challenges include poor data, supply chain limits, and contract structures that reward lowest cost, with success relying on simpler standards, better reporting, and stronger on-site capability.

 

A study published in Scientific Reports finds bio-based retrofitting using circular economy and LCA frameworks can reduce emissions, improve circularity, and lower costs in heritage buildings. Research across Middle East case studies shows significant lifecycle carbon reductions and better sustainability outcomes for construction and heritage conservation projects.

Residential construction is surging, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics reporting 53,567 dwelling commencements in the December quarter, the highest since 2021. Growth is being driven by strong multi-residential activity in New South Wales, with overall construction momentum also rising in Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.

A report by the Civil Contractors Federation warns Australia’s civil construction sector is under severe pressure from a fuel crisis, with diesel costs up 78% driving higher project expenses, thin margins and rising insolvency risks. Contractors face major viability challenges on fixed-price infrastructure and utility works.

Michael Schaper has been appointed chair of Infrastructure WA, taking the helm as the agency prepares to transition into the state’s first productivity commission, the 2050 Commission. Dr Schaper, a former deputy chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
