✒ Headlines & Industry
David Reid Homes Australia has relaunched under new ownership after its 2025 liquidation, with managing director Matt Jackson leading a growth strategy focused on modern systems and expansion. Nine franchisees have returned, signalling brand strength. The business aims to improve performance, scale operations, and re-establish itself as a premium custom home builder.
Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 has shortlisted two contracting consortiums: CPB Contractors Pty Ltd with SMEC Australia, and FCC Construction with Martinus Rail, Arcadis, and BG&E. These teams will compete to deliver major rail and civil works, including corridor widening, new tracks, platforms, and precinct upgrades ahead of 2030 completion.
A major unnamed Australian construction company has collapsed, putting around 650 jobs at risk. The firm delivered major infrastructure projects including hospitals and motorsport facilities. Rising material costs, labour shortages, and tight margins are cited as key pressures, highlighting wider fragility in the construction sector and risks to project delivery.
🏗️ Projects
NSW
Six architecture firms have been appointed for Sydney Metro West station designs, covering Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays. Firms include Bates Smart, SAA Architects, John McAslan and Partners, Neeson Murcutt Neille, Stewart Architecture and Aileen Sage Architects. Major construction is expected to follow, led by the Metro Vista consortium with Gamuda, Laing O’Rourke and DT Infrastructure.
WT Partnership has been appointed Independent Estimator for the Sydney Metro West Linewide Systems Package, working alongside John Holland. The role involves cost assurance for major rail systems works including track, power, ventilation, drainage, fire systems, and a new maintenance and control centre at Clyde, supporting delivery of the 2032 metro project.
A $198M, 37-storey mixed-use tower has been proposed for 33–43 Marion Street in Parramatta under the NSW Housing Delivery Authority pathway. The project includes 296 apartments, retail space, basement parking, and 29 affordable housing units, with major planning uplift to 128m height and 11.33:1 FSR near Harris Park Station.
QLD
Sunshine Coast-based CivEng Consulting is delivering construction-focused engineering across Australia’s energy transition, specialising in substations, BESS, and solar projects. The firm supports EPC contractors and asset owners with design, modelling, and structural solutions, enabling efficient project delivery and construction-ready outcomes across complex power and renewable infrastructure developments.
TAS
Construction has begun on Tipalea Partners’ $60M Stony Rise Village retail centre in Devonport, Tasmania. The project includes a Woolworths anchor, specialty retail, and services, with completion expected mid-2027. Early works focus on site establishment, services installation, and foundations, creating significant construction jobs and regional economic activity.
VIC
Victoria is investing $65M in health infrastructure upgrades at West Gippsland and Wonthaggi hospitals. Works include facility upgrades, a new pharmacy, pathology and imaging suites, and planning for future expansions. The program continues major regional construction investment, improving capacity, supporting healthcare delivery, and sustaining pipeline opportunities across Gippsland and Bass Coast.
WA
WA’s $1.5B hospital boost lifts total health infrastructure spend to $5.5B, but lacks detail on project allocation. Funds target new builds, maintenance, and delivery oversight, amid rising construction costs and potential blowouts. Government aims to future-proof major projects like the Women and Babies Hospital despite market uncertainty.
Fortescue is accelerating construction of a $3.56B off-grid renewable energy network in the Pilbara, comprising large-scale solar, wind, battery storage, and transmission infrastructure. The project will deliver 290MW by 2027 and scale to multi-gigawatt capacity, enabling 24/7 green mining operations and driving major construction activity across energy and resources infrastructure.
🧰 Construction Au Other
Civil Contractors Federation is calling for rise-and-fall clauses in all government civil contracts to protect builders from fuel and materials volatility. The move is driven by diesel price shocks and aims to allow cost adjustments during delivery. Industry groups warn fixed-price contracts are pushing smaller contractors into insolvency and threatening infrastructure delivery.
🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology
AI is expected to improve construction productivity by reducing downtime between trades, minimising rework through clash detection, and improving planning and cost forecasting. While it won’t replace physical construction methods, it can streamline scheduling, coordination, and decision-making to gradually lift efficiency in an industry that has lagged other sectors for decades.
🌱 Sustainability & Environment
Occupations in engineering, science, design and transport will be integral to Victoria achieving a circular economy, according to a new report. The report, Circular Jobs and Skills: Planning for Our Future, has been delivered by Sustainability Victoria on behalf of the Victorian Government and outlines key information on the state’s transition to a circular economy.
The Productivity Commission’s circular economy report highlights construction’s shift toward recycled materials to reduce costs and emissions. It calls for national harmonisation of standards, performance-based specifications, and regulatory reform to unlock productivity gains. Industry groups support increased use of recycled aggregates, noting infrastructure investment could benefit from more consistent cross-jurisdictional material rules.
👷♀️ Tradies and Resource
South Australia is building a defence workforce to support major complex defence projects, focusing on attracting and training skilled workers. The Defence Industry Pathways Program has produced its first graduates, creating a pipeline of talent to meet demand for shipbuilding, infrastructure, and advanced defence industry construction activity.
