THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES

âś’ Headlines & Industry

The Albanese Government has released a coastal adaptation plan for Cocos (Keeling) Islands, prioritising construction of seawalls, levees and cyclone shelters. Backed by $23.3 million, it outlines staged infrastructure works, further technical studies, and long-term resilience planning to address erosion, flooding and climate-driven asset risks.

The Western Australian Planning Commission has released a draft Renewable Energy Planning Code for consultation, aiming to standardise approvals for wind and solar projects. Councils, via WALGA, seek clearer rules on costs, community benefits and major project pathways, which will impact construction delivery timelines, approvals risk, renewable infrastructure investment certainty.

🏗️ Projects

NSW

Goodman Group has lodged a $798m hyperscale data centre at Lane Cove West, repurposing industrial land into an 81MW facility. The project involves major construction of a three-storey structure, with complex civil works, high electrical load infrastructure, noise control systems, and significant grid connection requirements driving construction and utility coordination risks.

The New South Wales is using seismic and geotechnical testing on the Great Western Highway to assess structural failure at Mitchells Causeway. Investigations found deteriorated 200-year-old fill, voids and wall movement, prompting urgent design of deep foundation repairs, test piling, and fast-tracked construction procurement to restore a critical transport freight corridor.

QLD

Draft rezoning by City of Moreton Bay to allow 15-storey apartments may strain delivery, with Urbis warning rising construction costs and Olympic-driven labour shortages could delay projects. About 35% of future supply faces risk, while population growth continues to outpace residential construction completions in south-east Queensland.

SA

The South Australia has opened a major renewable energy tender under the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act 2023, offering large-scale land for wind, solar, storage and hydrogen projects. The initiative aims to unlock utility-scale construction across 11,000km², requiring developer-led infrastructure, grid connection works, and staged renewable energy buildout.

VIC

The Victorian Government is accelerating construction delivery by fast-tracking rezoning across seven underutilised sites via the Development Facilitation Program. The initiative targets ~9,000 homes, cuts planning timeframes, unlocks infill development, and drives contractor activity, with mandated affordable housing and strong pipeline opportunities across metro and regional projects.

WA

Monadelphous Group Limited has secured about $145m in new and extended resources sector contracts, including works at Rio Tinto’s Paraburdoo mine, BHP Group’s Olympic Dam, and Queensland Alumina Limited. The packages include construction upgrades, maintenance, shutdowns and demolition works across WA, SA, QLD and PNG.

🧰 Construction Au Other

Seven major projects have been shortlisted for the 2026 Australian Construction Achievement Awards, including the $15.5bn Melbourne Metro Tunnel, Western Sydney Airport works, ECU City Campus, Sydney Fish Market redevelopment, New Footscray Hospital, Groote Eylandt Wharf rebuild, and Kimberley Marine Support Base, showcasing major infrastructure, transport, health and marine delivery.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

A $1.2m partnership between Charles Darwin University, Civiltech Solutions and AMCRC is developing AI and robotic road repair systems. Using LiDAR scanning, automation and additive manufacturing, the project aims to detect and fix pavement cracks earlier, reducing manual inspections, lowering maintenance costs, and improving lifecycle performance of Australia’s road infrastructure.

AI is reshaping the construction industry by enabling solo and micro contractors to scale work without adding staff. Trade-specific AI tools automate estimating, permitting, and project management, boosting productivity and revenue capacity. With labour shortages and complex regulations, AI is becoming a key driver of efficiency and business growth in construction.

🌱 Sustainability & Environment

A new study shows a hybrid concrete binder using fly ash, slag, biomass ash and graphene can cut embodied carbon by ~45% while improving strength and durability. The mix enhances construction sustainability by reducing cement demand, lowering emissions in structural works, and improving performance in large-scale infrastructure and building projects.

Tyre Stewardship Australia is driving construction uptake of crumb rubber in roads, moving recycled tyre materials from trials into standard practice. Through council partnerships and supply chain development, it is enabling scalable use of recycled rubber in asphalt, improving pavement performance while advancing circular economy outcomes in road construction and maintenance works.

Australia’s cement sector is facing rising fuel, freight and material costs while shifting toward low-carbon construction solutions. Projects like green cement hubs and alternative binders are scaling up, including SCM reuse from industrial waste. Construction demand is driving adoption of greener materials, but price pressures and imports risk ongoing supply instability.

🌏 Around the World

A proposed $2.7bn takeover of IJM Corporation by Sunway Group has collapsed after shareholder support fell to 33%, below the required threshold. The deal, aimed at creating a major construction player, failed amid valuation concerns and deal structure issues, halting consolidation in Malaysia’s construction and property sector.

The $4.7bn contract awarded to WeBuild for the construction of an artificial lake at Trojena, in Saudi Arabia, has been cancelled, after 30% of the work has been completed.

đź“– Miscellaneous

A whistleblower alleges Transdev scrapped a $500k safety retrofit for Sydney Light Rail despite successful trials, citing cost. The sensor system, requiring fleet-wide installation, highlights challenges in funding safety upgrades, retrofit integration, and prioritising capital works across complex rail infrastructure assets.
