✒ Headlines & Industry

Former Queensland officials told the CFMEU inquiry that former Labor ministers Mick de Brenni and Grace Grace allegedly intervened in operational matters at the QBCC and Office of Industrial Relations. Witnesses claimed union complaints influenced regulatory actions and decision-making, while Labor leader Steven Miles said the allegations remain untested and should be treated cautiously pending further evidence.

The Queensland Government has committed $3.2 billion to the CopperString project, with early works underway at Flinders Substation and the Eastern Link progressing, aiming to connect North and North West Queensland to the NEM. The project also includes a $200 million North West Energy Fund to support renewables, batteries and microgrids, unlocking critical minerals development and long-term regional energy supply.

The Albanese Government says it will set new rules for Australia’s rapidly expanding data centre and AI infrastructure boom, including a proposed “triple lock” requiring operators to: bring additional renewable energy, fully pay for network infrastructure, and actively support grid stability. Officials say the policy is aimed at avoiding mistakes from the resources boom, as data centres already use about 2% of national electricity demand and are rapidly expanding.

🏗️ Projects

NSW

The NSW Government has commenced demolition works for the $2 billion new Bankstown Hospital, the largest public hospital investment in state history. Main construction is expected to begin in 2027, delivering a 14-storey hospital, expanded clinical services and supporting 3,600 jobs as part of a broader $3.4 billion Western Sydney health infrastructure program.

Griffith City Council in NSW has secured $9.5 million in funding for two infrastructure projects under the Sustainable Communities Program. Works include upgrading the Griffith Livestock Marketing Centre with new roofing, amenities and solar readiness, and widening Boorga Road to support the Lake Wyangan housing precinct and improve access.

NSW councils are calling for a $5 billion interest-free loan fund to help fund essential infrastructure like roads, stormwater, water and social services needed to unlock housing supply, particularly in Western Sydney. The plan claims it could enable up to 70,000 new homes by allowing councils to build infrastructure upfront and repay loans later through developer contributions and government funding mechanisms.

SA

South Australia has awarded contracts under its FERM scheme to six large-scale battery energy storage projects totalling 517MW / 4136MWh, including Akaysha Energy, Neoen, Iberdrola and AMPYR developments. The projects will more than double the state’s storage capacity, supporting renewable integration and providing up to eight hours of dispatchable power.

TAS

Hydro Tasmania has commenced major refurbishment works on a second generating unit at Poatina Power Station, advancing its long-term program to modernise one of Tasmania’s most significant hydropower assets.

VIC

TW Projects has expanded into metropolitan Melbourne, acquiring an 11.1-hectare site in Rockbank to develop a 257-lot residential community worth an estimated $100 million in partnership with Monark. The project targets growing housing demand in Melbourne’s western growth corridor, offering affordable, well-connected homes for families, first-home buyers and investors.

🧰 Construction Au Other

The OECD’s Steel Outlook 2026 warns that global steel overcapacity is set to rise to 745 million tonnes by 2028, driven by heavy government subsidies in non-OECD countries. This has created a flood of low-priced exports, distorting markets, undermining competition, and threatening viable domestic steel fabrication industries like Australia’s.

Major pumped storage hydropower projects across China, Australia, Vietnam and Queensland reached key construction milestones, reflecting growing investment in long-duration energy storage. China's 4.2GW Lianghekou project advanced major civil works, Australia's Snowy 2.0 surpassed 70% completion, while Vietnam's Bac Ai and Queensland's Borumba projects progressed toward supporting renewable-powered electricity grids.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

AI construction risk platform Enlaye has raised a US$5 million seed round led by Glasswing Ventures to scale its AI-powered Risk Lifecycle Management platform for the construction industry. The funding will support product development, expanded AI/ML capabilities, and international growth across North America and Europe, helping project stakeholders better predict and manage construction risks.

AI-enabled estimating is reshaping construction by automating manual quantity takeoffs and reducing estimator workload across planning, measurement and verification stages. Platforms like Beam AI allow teams to process drawings faster, shifting focus from repetitive measurement to pricing strategy, risk assessment and bid management, significantly increasing bid capacity without adding staff.

Structured AI, a platform that has quality assurance and quality control artificial intelligence agents developed for construction, has raised a $4.2 million seed round, bringing its total funding to $5 million.

🌱 Sustainability & Environment

Despite offering up to 80% lower embodied carbon, comparable costs and superior durability, geopolymer “green concrete” faces slow uptake in Australia due to client conservatism, regulatory hurdles and limited demand. Developers report sustainability is rarely a purchasing driver, forcing them to market the product's technical performance rather than its environmental benefits.
