🚨 Safety Updates
The NSW Resources Regulator has flagged rising non-compliance across mining and construction operations, with delayed reporting of work-related psychological illnesses. Some incidents were notified months or years late. Operators are being urged to strengthen psychosocial risk controls, improve consultation and ensure prompt reporting when medical certificates declare workers unfit for seven consecutive days.
✒ Headlines & Industry
Rapid global data centre expansion, including in Australia, is intensifying water security challenges. High-powered servers require vast cooling, impacting local water supplies. The sector’s growth calls for sustainable construction practices, water-efficient cooling systems, and coordinated planning. Without action, AI-driven infrastructure could strain water resources and affect environmental compliance in building projects.
Australian small builders face a “rough” 2026 as housing demand rises, with workforce shortages, rising material costs, and planning delays threatening insolvencies. HIA research shows most builders across NSW, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania, and WA expect no profit growth, highlighting urgent need for skilled trades, reduced red tape, and government support.

The $35 million Coochin Creek Eco-Tourism Park on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast has received government approval, transforming 43 hectares into 150 sites with cabins and campsites. Construction will create 200 jobs, with 35 permanent roles post-completion, while strict environmental safeguards protect wetlands, balancing regional tourism growth, infrastructure upgrades, and local economic benefits.
Bastion Development Group has lodged plans for a $180 million, 30-storey residential tower, Surfer, in Surfers Paradise. Featuring 100 two-bedroom apartments, a gym, pool, boutique retail, restaurant, kids’ zone, and private plunge pools, the project aims to meet demand for design-led living in the Gold Coast’s vibrant beachfront precinct.
A development application for three modern vehicle showrooms at 151–173 Sandgate Road, 4–14 Tate Street, and 13–23 Collingwood Street, Albion, has been approved. Designed by Wim Architects, the 11,779 sqm site will consolidate automotive sales and servicing across two stages, with multi-level showrooms, 64 servicing hoists, 235 parking spaces, and over 9% landscaping.
SA
Tilt Renewables will begin constructing the 288 MW Palmer wind farm, 70 km east of Adelaide, in 2026. The project, featuring 40 turbines, will power 142,000 homes while minimizing environmental impact. Backed by AGL and the Commonwealth, it delivers over AUD 13 million in community benefits, supporting South Australia’s renewable energy transition.
TAS
Demolition of Hobart’s old Bridgewater Bridge has reached a major milestone, with its 41-metre lift span being removed to reopen the River Derwent to vessels. The works support tourism, recreation and industry, following the opening of the $786 million New Bridgewater Bridge in 2025.
VIC
Melbourne’s west will see major transport upgrades with the 14-day Melton Line construction blitz. Works include a new West Tarneit Station, extended platforms for nine-car trains, four level crossing removals, and a modern Melton Station. The project boosts capacity by 50%, improves safety, and supports the region’s rapid population growth.
WA
Western Australia has introduced State Planning Policy 2.9 – Water, embedding water considerations into development decisions. The policy consolidates six previous frameworks, addressing water availability, stormwater, wastewater, and ecosystem protection. It aims to futureproof growth, align planning with climate adaptation, and ensure sustainable water management across metropolitan and regional areas.
WestStar Industrial’s subsidiary SIMPEC has secured an $11 million contract for structural, mechanical, and piping works at Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia’s Kwinana lithium hydroxide refinery. Scheduled for completion in Q2 2026, SIMPEC will deliver all SMP works, supporting safe, efficient operations for the joint venture between Tianqi Lithium and IGO.
🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology
JLG Industries has acquired core robotics technology from start-up Canvas to expand its autonomous and connected access equipment offerings. The partnership, ongoing for six years, will integrate Canvas tech with JLG machines for interior construction applications, advancing site automation, efficiency, productivity, and consistency in construction projects worldwide.
Construction SMEs risk falling behind as AI transforms the industry, with barriers including high costs, limited skills, and fragmented IT. Research highlights that phased pilot projects, strong leadership, workforce upskilling, and external partnerships can enable adoption. Bridging this digital divide is essential for competitiveness, resilience, and inclusive industry growth.
At CES 2026, Caterpillar unveiled its intelligent, autonomous construction machines, spanning excavators, dozers, loaders, and haul trucks. Backed by over 30 years of autonomy research, these AI-driven systems enhance safety, precision, and productivity. Caterpillar now operates one of the world’s largest autonomous mining fleets, moving 11 billion tonnes of material.
🌱 Sustainability & Environment
New research shows mine tailings, a major mining waste, can partially replace cement in concrete, reducing carbon emissions and promoting circular economy principles. Silica-rich tailings enhance strength and durability, with 5–20% replacement balancing performance and sustainability. Proper testing ensures safety, making tailings a promising low-carbon solution for construction.
WES-Tec Global’s ECOCCUBE converts mixed waste plastic into durable, lightweight construction blocks for coastal, river, and flood-prone infrastructure. Exceeding concrete in strength, the system reduces carbon emissions, prevents plastic pollution, and supports climate-resilient engineering. Award-winning and scalable, ECOCCUBE offers a sustainable solution for infrastructure and environmental protection.
Researchers at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) are testing Xiriton, a bio-based concrete alternative made from local grass, shells, volcanic pozzolan, and seawater. Carbon-negative and circular, it reinforces coastlines, supports marine life, and naturally degrades, offering a sustainable, scalable solution for coastal restoration and biodiversity enhancement.
🌏 Around the World
Cimic subsidiary Leighton Asia has secured a contract for civil and mechanical works on BP’s Tangguh UCC project in Papua Barat, Indonesia.
