THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES

✒ Headlines & Industry

Victoria’s anti-corruption watchdog defended keeping quiet about rejecting a 2024 referral to probe alleged CFMEU-linked criminality in construction. The Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission said it lacked jurisdiction. The issue resurfaced in a Victorian parliamentary hearing, amid allegations of organised crime influence and calls to expand the watchdog’s investigative powers.

The Transport for NSW has issued a notice of default to the CGU consortium over delays on the $3.1bn M6 Motorway. Work stalled after sinkholes and geological faults emerged. The Chris Minns government insists contractors must finish the project under the existing contract or face potential legal consequences.

Australian Constructors Association is urging governments nationwide to embed the Construction Industry Culture Standard into major project procurement. CEO Jon Davies says trials on projects like the Randwick Children's Hospital Redevelopment show improved worker retention, higher female participation and better wellbeing without increasing costs or project delivery time.

đŸ—ïž Projects

ACT

Canberra’s water security strategy highlights that while current storages remain sufficient, population growth and climate change could strain supplies by 2040. Planning focuses on long-term resilience, exploring climate-dependent (surface water) and independent (recycling, reuse) options. Emphasis remains on efficiency, demand management, and system diversification within Basin limits to avoid future shortages.

NSW

The New South Wales government has released the draft proposal for the Burwood North Metro state-led rezoning, an urban project set to deliver up to 18,300 new homes and 3,900 jobs in one of Sydney’s most iconic precincts.

Construction on the Burroway project is expected to create approximately 250 full-time jobs over a 20-month build period, with five ongoing operational positions once the facility becomes operational.

The project is expected to create at least 60 jobs during construction and 10 permanent positions once operational, contributing to regional economic development while establishing technical expertise in hydrogen production.

Retailer Aldi has gained approval for an automated distribution centre in the Aerotropolis precinct next to the new Western Sydney Airport. The project is also expected to generate approximately 3,700 jobs during construction

NT

Construction company Asbuild NT has been awarded the tender to build the Papulu Pika Pikka-Ka boarding facility at Tennant Creek High School. Funded by the Anthony Albanese government and the Northern Territory, the $19m project will house 40 remote students and forms part of the Barkly Regional Deal.

VIC

New modelling from Civil Contractors Federation Victoria, prepared by Oxford Economics Australia, forecasts Victoria’s water and sewerage construction spending will rise 70% from $1.4 billion in FY2025 to $2.4 billion by FY2030. Demand driven by population growth, housing development and energy-related infrastructure could push the sector’s five-year project pipeline to $10 billion.

WA

Bechtel Infrastructure Australia has been appointed to lead master planning for the Henderson Defence Precinct in WA. The consultancy will design infrastructure to support continuous naval shipbuilding, future submarines and frigates, and maintenance hubs. The project, backed by $12 billion in government funding, will create thousands of skilled construction and industrial jobs.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

Researchers reporting in Scientific Reports found combining superabsorbent polymers with bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis can strengthen concrete and reduce cracking. The bio-polymeric system improves internal curing, cuts shrinkage by about 33%, and increases compressive strength and durability, offering benefits for construction in water-scarce regions

Jose Atwell argues Australia needs a national framework to evaluate new construction systems against criteria such as productivity, sustainability and scalability. Writing for Atwell Research, he says the fragmented industry lacks a clear pathway to assess breakthrough innovations and accelerate adoption of digital, system-level building solutions.

The “single source of truth” in AEC aims to centralize project info, but decades of digital tools show a single platform rarely fits reality. Teams use dozens of applications—design, ERP, CRM, emails—creating fragmented data. Experts suggest a “single pane of glass” approach: integrate systems behind the scenes for unified access, saving 20–40% of time spent hunting information. AI can further sort, summarize, and link data, turning knowledge into a strategic asset. Future-ready firms will treat project data as critical, preserving expertise and enabling smarter, faster decisions across workflows.

đŸŒ± Sustainability & Environment

A webinar hosted by Council on Vertical Urbanism and constructsteel heard the global steel industry can cut emissions through electric arc furnaces, hydrogen-based direct reduced iron and carbon capture. The sector, responsible for 7–9% of global emissions, must also adopt circular design and low-carbon materials in construction.

Holcim reports progress toward 2025 sustainability targets, reducing carbon emissions and advancing circular construction. Using ECOCycle, it aims to process 20 million tons of demolition material by 2030, replacing virgin inputs. The company also focuses on urban biodiversity, energy efficiency, and freshwater reduction, advancing its 2050 net-zero commitment across 43 markets.

🌏 Around the World

Ferrovial and Budimex won a $699m contract to construct 17.5 km of electrified double-track railway, two 900 m tunnels, 39 bridges, and other infrastructure in southern Poland. The PodĆ‚Ä™ĆŒe–GdĂłw project, part of the national rail modernisation, will improve freight capacity, safety, and connectivity, with construction scheduled over 38–46 months.

The Government has published an expanded version of the UK’s 10‑year Infrastructure Pipeline, offering businesses and investors a deeper view of planned public and private capital projects – and, for the first time, an estimate of the workforce and skills likely to be needed.
