THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES

🚨 Safety Updates

Young male tradies face a significantly higher suicide risk than other employed men, with workers aged 25–34 most vulnerable. New research links elevated rates to workplace bullying, isolation, financial stress, long hours and mental health stigma, prompting calls for stronger support as Australia pushes to deliver 1.2 million new homes by 2029.

✒ Headlines & Industry

A Queensland inquiry into CFMEU misconduct heard emotional evidence from senior bureaucrat Andrea Fox, who alleged former CFMEU boss Michael Ravbar verbally abused and threatened her during a 2018 meeting. Fox said she feared physical assault and later sought counselling. The inquiry is also examining claims the union improperly influenced workplace regulators.

Australia is experiencing a $150 billion data centre boom driven by AI demand, with projects boosting construction and economic growth. However, concerns remain that long-term benefits may flow offshore through imported technology and foreign-owned operators, while rising electricity and water demand could increase costs, strain infrastructure and challenge energy transition goals.

A record-breaking 15.7-metre tunnel boring machine, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, is being prepared for launch under Sydney Harbour as part of the Western Harbour Tunnel project. The machine will excavate 1.5km of twin tunnels, operating 44m below ground with 24/7 crews, advanced slurry systems and precast segment lining to complete a major motorway link by 2028.

🏗️ Projects

NSW

NSW is trialling modular housing at Schofields in Sydney’s north-west to speed up construction and boost supply. Nine terrace homes are being assembled using prefabricated methods, cutting build times and costs by up to 20%. The project is part of a broader 140-dwelling precinct aimed at increasing affordable housing and productivity.

The Hills Shire Council has unveiled a construction upgrade for the Aub Juleff Arena at Castle Hill Showground, backed by $11.5 million in NSW funding. Works will deliver a renewed multipurpose field, new seating and shade, improved drainage, upgraded parking and pedestrian access, and better site connectivity near the Metro station.

QLD

Queensland’s Bruce Highway upgrade program has reached key milestones, with 52 new tenders set for release under the $9 billion safety program. Works include pavement strengthening, overtaking lanes, bridge replacements, rest areas and intersection upgrades. Ten Central Queensland projects are progressing, while completed upgrades at Bauple and Tully improve safety and flood resilience.

TAS

TasNetworks is refurbishing a 71km, 75-year-old transmission line in Tasmania’s north-west as part of a major long-term upgrade program. Crews are replacing ageing towers with modern, taller structures while keeping the line live, improving reliability and flexibility for future energy flows and supporting Tasmania’s wider renewable energy transition and interconnection projects.

VIC

Construction is progressing on Victoria’s $55 million Ballarat Intermodal Freight Hub, supporting around 100 local jobs. Delivered by Taylor Rail Australia, works include 3km of new rail, signalling, drainage and civil infrastructure. The project will boost rail freight capacity, support regional industry growth and improve freight connections to the Port of Melbourne.

Final designs have been released for the Macleod rail bridge project removing the Ruthven Street level crossing. Early works have started, with major construction due later this year. The project will improve safety, cut congestion by up to 30 minutes at peak times, add walking and cycling links, and enable more frequent Hurstbridge Line services.

WA

BHP has committed $160 million to major community infrastructure upgrades in Port Hedland, including an $80 million redevelopment of Hedland Senior High School, a new aquatic centre, and worker housing. The projects aim to improve education facilities, address housing shortages, and support long-term workforce retention in the Pilbara region.

The Western Australian government has revealed plans to modernise century-old planning legislation, a move designed to cut through redundant red tape and streamline development processes in Perth’s western suburbs.

🧰 Construction Au Other

Georgiou Group has been selected to deliver a $67 million, 24-bed secure extended care unit at Bentley Hospital, as the state releases another $167 million worth of contracts.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

Ovarro is expanding its global partner network to support growing demand for leakage detection and water network monitoring. The company is seeking new distributors and system integrators to deploy its IoT-based leak detection and telemetry technologies, helping utilities improve real-time visibility, reduce water loss, and strengthen operational control across ageing infrastructure.

Construction is rapidly adopting AI, automation and electrification, according to Caterpillar’s CTO. Technologies like machine control, payload tracking and autonomous equipment are improving productivity and safety. Edge computing and AI enable more flexible jobsite autonomy, while electrification requires coordinated energy management. Adoption is gradual but increasingly driven by labour and demand pressures.

🌱 Sustainability & Environment

Research shows secondary recycled concrete can support circular construction when replacement is limited to around 50%. Higher recycled content reduces crack resistance and durability due to increased porosity and microcracks, but strength remains comparable to conventional concrete. The findings support reuse of construction waste while highlighting the need for controlled mix design in sustainable building.

A major upgrade at Cement Australia’s Railton kiln in Tasmania will enable co-processing of wood waste fuel and tyre-derived fuel, cutting coal use by 35%. The $106 million project, supported by $52.9 million in federal funding, is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 107,000 tonnes annually through high-temperature kiln waste-to-energy combustion.

Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel project has received the highest sustainability ratings available from both the Green Building Council of Australia and the Infrastructure Sustainability Council, recognising its environmental, social and economic performance across design, construction and operation.

🌏 Around the World

China’s green infrastructure boom is reshaping deserts with massive solar and wind projects, forming a multi-trillion-dollar industry now comparable to major global economies. Massive state-backed investment has driven rapid clean energy expansion, including desert solar “mega-bases” that generate power for urban centres while also beginning to transform arid landscapes into greener environments.

A 50/50 joint venture between Webuild’s US arm Lane Construction and Brayman Construction has secured a $1bn contract to deliver the Ohio River Tunnel project in Pennsylvania. The works include an 8km deep tunnel system up to 45m underground to capture sewage overflow, reducing about 7 billion gallons of untreated water entering rivers annually.

Global energy and construction firm Vinci Construction has grown its ground technologies business in Latin America with the acquisition of Grupo TDM’s geosynthetics division in Peru.

👷‍♀️ Tradies and Resource

Tasmania has appointed Deputy Premier Guy Barnett as Minister for Environment and Climate Change as part of a Cabinet reshuffle. The changes also include new portfolio allocations across arts, innovation and tourism, with a streamlined ministry expected to deliver over $1 million in savings while the government focuses on infrastructure, health, education and economic delivery.

The Australian Government has reappointed Erin Flaherty as Chair of the National Intermodal Corporation and Non-Executive Director of Inland Rail Pty Ltd for two-year terms. The move ensures continuity of leadership across major freight rail projects, including Moorebank and Beveridge intermodal precincts, during a critical stage of infrastructure delivery.
