THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES

🚨 Safety Updates

SafeWork SA has launched a statewide campaign featuring Stanley the talking safety cone to promote workplace safety. The campaign highlights common hazards like falls, vehicle incidents and spills, which have led to 21 deaths and 496 serious injuries over four years, aiming to keep safety front of mind across all industries.

WorkSafe is calling for nominations showcasing innovative safety solutions that reduce workplace risk. The award recognises practical systems, procedures or designs that improve health and safety outcomes. Applicants must outline the problem identified and their solution. Entries close 5pm Friday 29 May 2026, encouraging shared improvements across industries.

Customconstruction Pty Ltd has been convicted and fined $100,000, in the District Court of NSW as a result of a prosecution by SafeWork NSW. These proceedings arose from an incident on 25 July 2022, when a worker sustained injuries after falling approximately 3.8 metres from a 2-storey house.

âś’ Headlines & Industry

Australia’s road construction sector has remained resilient despite major global supply shocks, including the Strait of Hormuz crisis. The Australian Flexible Pavement Association highlighted fuel shortages, rising diesel costs and bitumen supply issues, urging reforms to contracts, fuel reserves and supply frameworks to better manage future disruptions.

Australia’s largest gas pipeline company, APA Group, faces scrutiny over potentially misleading claims about its North to East Pipeline and Beetaloo Basin costs. Independent analysis shows Beetaloo gas is far more expensive and smaller than APA’s earlier presentations suggested, raising investor transparency concerns amid falling global LNG demand.

🏗️ Projects

NSW

The M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace is now set to open in late 2026, over a year early, after completion of the Heatherbrae Bypass. The $2.24 billion project will reduce congestion, improve safety and deliver faster journeys, with remaining southern works expected to finish later this year.

The 800 MW Dinawan Solar Farm and 1.57 GWh battery storage project in NSW has secured final approval. Developed by Spark Renewables, the AUD 1.35 billion hybrid installation will enhance grid reliability, reduce fossil fuel reliance, create 400 construction jobs, and deliver dispatchable renewable energy across the South West Renewable Energy Zone.

VIC

The Victorian Government has committed $7.5 million to the Sunshine Station Masterplan, enhancing Clarke Street with a plaza, arts hub and event spaces. Part of a broader $143 million program, the upgrade aims to boost safety, accessibility and transform Sunshine into a vibrant cultural, transport and commercial hub.

Cardinia Reservoir in Melbourne will undergo upgrades from 2027, including dam wall raising, filter improvements, and enhanced leakage monitoring. Melbourne Water aims to halve native vegetation removal and protect high-value ecological areas, ensuring resilient water supply for the growing city while minimizing environmental impacts during the refurbishment.

WA

A redevelopment of the Perth Girls School precinct is back on the cards with ADC's $110 million updated plan unanimously approved by a planning authority body.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

Autodesk and Pinnacle Infotech have signed an MoU to accelerate construction digitisation across the AECO sector. The partnership integrates Autodesk’s cloud platforms with Pinnacle’s digital engineering services, promoting connected workflows, Digital Twin adoption, and data-driven project delivery. Focused on APAC, it aims to improve efficiency, coordination, and lifecycle outcomes.

OnSite , a Singapore-based startup developing an AI-powered communication platform for the construction and facilities management industry, has raised S$1.7 million ($1.3 million) in a seed funding round.

Conxai, a Munich-based construction AI startup, raised €5M to deploy agentic AI in the AEC sector. Founded by Sharique Husain, it automates workflows using construction-specific data via SiteLens and a Neuro-Agentic Reasoning Architecture. The no-code platform enhances reporting, project control, and site visibility, backed by Earlybird, Pi Labs, noa, and Zacua Ventures.

🌱 Sustainability & Environment

A new whitepaper highlights how construction and waste operators face rising material volumes, compliance pressures and low circularity rates. It emphasises digital tools, data integration and ERP systems to improve resource recovery, reduce costs and boost efficiency, supporting the construction sector’s shift toward sustainable, circular project delivery and reduced environmental impact.

Across Australia, construction is embracing sustainability through smarter equipment use. Hiring over buying increases machine utilization, reduces idle resources, and lowers emissions, while innovations like electric, hybrid, and battery-powered machinery improve efficiency. Combined, these practices cut environmental impact, optimize costs, and support more adaptable, sustainable construction across urban and regional projects.

🌏 Around the World

Global hospitality construction is now a $1.8 trillion pipeline, heavily weighted toward execution, exposing projects to labor, procurement, and financing risks. North America and MENA lead in scale, Asia-Pacific grows unevenly, and mixed-use developments dominate. Construction success increasingly relies on adaptability, phased delivery, and flexible design to manage volatility and demand shifts.

The UK government plans a construction retentions ban, 60-day payment cap for large firms, and 8% statutory interest on late payments, targeting chronic late payment issues. The reforms aim to improve cash flow, shift risk management from retentions to alternative securities, and reshape payment culture across the construction sector.

👷‍♀️ Tradies and Resource

The Fair Work Commission has thrown out an unfair dismissal case brought by a young tradie. An apprentice tradie who was fired for constantly being on his phone has had his unfair dismissal claim thrown out by the Fair Work Commission
