THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES

âś’ Headlines & Industry

PVC costs have jumped over 30% due to petrol and gas supply disruptions linked to the Iran conflict, triggering shortages that are delaying construction projects, squeezing builders on fixed-price contracts, and adding further pressure to Australia’s already strained housing and infrastructure pipeline.

Queensland farmers are pushing for stricter rules on renewable developments, warning poor community benefit agreements and siting decisions could impact land use, infrastructure planning, and long-term construction across regional areas.

Correlation between insolvencies and fuel price Soaring global oil prices are emerging as a major insolvency trigger for Australia’s construction industry, amplifying pressures on contractors already battling thin margins, volatile input costs and tightening cash flow

Australia’s construction cranes remain highly active, with 838 counted nationwide in March 2026. Residential crane numbers dipped slightly, but civil and non-residential projects—including transport, healthcare, and data centres—are driving growth. Major hubs like Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Adelaide saw record activity, reflecting elevated overall construction work valued at $318 billion.

🏗️ Projects

NSW

The 100 MW Springdale solar project north-west of Sutton, ACT, has been scrapped after developers missed the planning permit deadline. Originally approved in 2021, the $120 million project faced objections and lacked battery storage, highlighting the shift toward hybrid solar-plus-storage projects in the region.

The NSW Independent Planning Commission has approved Spark Renewables’ Dinawan Solar Farm, an 800 MW solar project with 356 MW/1,574 MWh battery storage, as part of the Dinawan Energy Hub in the South West REZ. The project will improve grid stability, support interconnectors, and deliver community benefits including funding, training, and First Nations workforce opportunities.

The NSW Government has approved 33 new road safety projects across 20 regional councils, delivering upgrades for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. Works include footpaths, shared paths, roundabouts, wombat crossings, safety barriers, and lighting. Jointly funded with the Federal Government, the $19.7 million investment aims to reduce serious and fatal crashes.

QLD

The Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) has approved a loan facility of up to $72 million for QPM Energy to build the 112MW Isaac Power Station. The $196 million project is on track to be the first major gas-fired power station built in Queensland for more than 15 years.

TAS

A $21m aeromedical facility at Launceston Airport will enhance emergency response, expand rural healthcare access, and support construction jobs, delivering modern aviation, clinical, and logistics infrastructure to replace ageing facilities and strengthen statewide service capability.

VIC

Early works begin on PDG’s 71-storey One Queens Bridge in Melbourne, reviving a long-idle site with a major mixed-use project blending luxury residences, hotel, and heritage integration, signalling renewed high-rise construction momentum in the CBD.

Victoria’s Essential Services Commission has released draft decisions for Melbourne Water and North East Water for 2026–31, broadly supporting $7.3 billion and $280 million infrastructure investment, respectively, while recommending tighter cost controls. Proposed changes aim to balance service reliability with manageable customer bills, with feedback open before final determinations in June.

WA

The $160m Kimberley Marine Support Base in Broome highlights advanced modular construction and tidal-resilient design, overcoming extreme conditions to deliver continuous marine operations—now earning recognition as a finalist for a national construction award.

Office-to-residential conversions offer potential to ease housing shortages and reuse ageing buildings, but face major design, cost, and regulatory challenges. While adaptive reuse can deliver sustainability and urban renewal benefits, only a small share of offices are suitable, requiring careful planning, incentives, and broader infrastructure investment to succeed at scale.

Seven major Australian projects worth over $17 billion are finalists for the 2026 Australian Construction Achievement Award, spanning education, transport, health, marine, and disaster recovery. Highlights include Victoria’s Metro Tunnel, New Footscray Hospital, Sydney Fish Market, and Western Sydney International Airport. Winners will be announced in August 2026.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

Australian tradies miss an estimated 270,000 calls a day, according to Sydney-based startup Chime Labs. Its founders are hoping their AI receptionist can pick up when they can’t. Chime Labs L-R Alexis Griveau, Mathew Pretel.

Because most construction firms, especially on short-term or isolated projects cannot afford permanent on-site clinics or full medical staff, technology enables faster, safer interventions, helping mitigate injuries, reduce downtime, and improve worker safety without the prohibitive costs of traditional in-house medical facilities. Find out how.

🌱 Sustainability & Environment

New research highlights growing use of recycled concrete and industrial waste in construction, improving sustainability and performance, but inconsistent material quality, durability concerns, and the need for full lifecycle assessment still limit large-scale adoption.

đź“– Miscellaneous

Australia’s EV sales jumped 40–50% amid Middle East fuel disruptions, highlighting growing demand—but widespread adoption now hinges on scalable kerbside charging, with faster DC chargers and smart pricing key to supporting apartment dwellers and avoiding grid strain.

Five Australian projects will share A$13 million from ARENA’s National Industrial Transformation Programme to accelerate decarbonisation, cut energy costs, and support low-carbon supply chains. Initiatives include electrifying a brewhouse, retrofitting laundry systems, and replacing a 40-year-old gas furnace with electric, demonstrating practical emissions-reduction solutions across industries
