THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES

🚨 Safety Updates

New research shows FIFO workers sleep less and experience poorer-quality rest while on shift, increasing fatigue, health risks and psychological distress. The impacts extend to partners and families, affecting wellbeing and relationships. Businesses also face higher safety risks, productivity losses and costly staff turnover when fatigue remains unmanaged.

âś’ Headlines & Industry

Australia’s GDP growth slowed to 0.3% in early 2026, with industry leaders warning weak housing and construction activity could further drag the economy. Master Builders says higher rates, rising costs and policy pressures are weighing on builders, noting construction’s critical role in GDP and urging stronger support for new housing supply.

🏗️ Projects

NSW

Construction has started on the 21st and final bridge of the Coffs Harbour Bypass in New South Wales, with piling underway for a southbound highway underpass near Opal Boulevard. The $2.2 billion project is being delivered by Gamuda Australia and Ferrovial under Transport for NSW, with opening expected later this year.

Transgrid has begun early planning for the Sydney Ring South project in New South Wales, a major transmission upgrade aimed at easing grid constraints and supporting renewable energy integration. The proposal includes upgrading the 330kV network and potentially building a new 500kV line, delivering long-term capacity and reliability benefits for Sydney’s energy supply.

QLD

A $60 million, three-stage upgrade is planned for School Road in Redbank Plains, Ipswich, Queensland. The project will widen the corridor from two to four lanes, add cycle lanes and improve intersections to ease congestion, with construction expected to begin in 2029 and continue through to 2032.

Construction has started on the $3.8 billion Brisbane Stadium at Victoria Park, marking a key milestone for the 2032 Olympic Games. The 63,000-seat venue, being delivered under a joint federal and state funding program, will host ceremonies and athletics and later serve as a major AFL and cricket stadium for Brisbane.

SA

South Australia will more than double its large-scale battery storage capacity after awarding six projects under its Firm Energy Reliability Mechanism. The developments will add 517MW/4,136MWh of dispatchable energy, boosting reliability and enabling up to eight hours of supply during shortfalls, supporting the state’s transition to a more resilient energy system.

A 21-storey, 1,028-bed student housing tower by Journal Student Living has been approved for North Terrace in Adelaide’s CBD, directly opposite Adelaide University. Designed by Cox Architecture and backed by Brookfield and Citiplan, the project exceeds height limits but was supported for its design quality and urban activation outcomes.

TAS

A new strategy has outlined priority upgrades for Tasmania’s Ridgley Highway, a vital freight and tourism route linking Burnie to the west coast. Backed by $27.2 million in funding, proposed works include climbing lanes, intersection upgrades, road widening, safety barriers and improved access for heavy vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

Works on Bass Highway upgrades between Wynyard and Waratah include a new rest area at Detention River and junction upgrades at Flowerdale under the $100 million program delivering safety and freight efficiency improvements across Tasmania’s northwest corridor. construction expected complete January 2027 period respectively

VIC

Victoria’s planning reforms have boosted housing applications, with townhouse and low-rise development proposals rising nearly 50% in a year. The Townhouse Code has streamlined approvals for duplexes and low-rise projects, driving growth across Melbourne’s middle suburbs and regional centres like Geelong and Bendigo, supporting faster housing delivery near key services.

WA

Some 16 million trees will be planted across 28,000ha of Great Southern farmland for a project worth an estimated $40 million.

Multiplex has received more than $500 million in cash injections from its Canadian parent Brookfield Asset Management over three years of losses in Australia’s low-margin construction sector. Latest accounts show $220 million added last year, following $241 million in 2024 and $56 million in 2023, supporting ongoing operations amid ongoing losses.

Mansfield-based Vacuum Truck Supplies (VTS) in Victoria has been acquired by Sweden’s DISAB Group, marking a new phase for the Australian manufacturer of vacuum trucks and equipment. The deal strengthens DISAB’s expansion into Australia, with VTS continuing operations at its Mansfield site under its established brand and workforce.

Article argues Australia’s National Construction Code has become overly complex, duplicative and costly, contributing to housing supply and productivity issues. It says expansion into accessibility, sustainability and energy efficiency has increased burden on builders. The author calls for streamlining, clearer structure and a return to the Code’s original safety-focused purpose.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

Article argues that AI adoption in construction jobsite workflows could significantly improve productivity, reduce delays, and help the industry cope with rising demand from the data centre construction boom. It highlights current resistance from skilled workers but suggests AI tools could improve accuracy in estimating, planning, and coordination, ultimately reshaping how projects are delivered.

🌱 Sustainability & Environment

Brickworks has partnered with Kennedy Nolan on “Our Next Neighbourhood”, a design study exploring how better planning, materials and adaptability can improve Australian suburban housing. The collaboration focuses on flexible, durable and energy-efficient home designs suited to changing lifestyles, highlighting brick construction as a key material for long-term liveability and performance.

Powerhouse Parramatta, being built by Lendlease, is set to open at the end of 2026 as Australia’s largest cultural infrastructure project since the Sydney Opera House. Designed by Moreau Kusunoki with Genton Architects, the museum features a net-zero design, exoskeleton structure and flexible exhibition spaces along the Parramatta River.

🌏 Around the World

A Kiewit-Stacey Witbeck-Herzog joint venture has been awarded a $3.5 billion contract to construct a 119-mile section of California’s high-speed rail project between Bakersfield and Merced. The package includes track, signalling and communications works, advancing the scaled-back plan to deliver initial passenger services in California by 2033.

Construction is forecast to face a major labour shortfall, with Skills England estimating demand for about 1.09 million additional workers by 2035. This includes growth of 493,000 roles plus replacement demand as 595,000 workers retire or leave the sector. The pressure is driven by housing targets, infrastructure delivery, and net-zero projects.

đź“– Miscellaneous

Underworld figure Mick Gatto and wife Cheryl were arrested by Victoria Police's Taskforce Hawk as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial offences linked to construction industry corruption. The arrests follow scrutiny of CFMEU-linked criminal infiltration and allegations of extortion affecting Victorian building projects.

Taxpayers have spent almost $9 million on security for current and former CFMEU administrators amid credible death threats linked to organised crime. Senate estimates heard the protection was necessary to safeguard officials overseeing the union’s administration and investigations into alleged corruption and criminal infiltration across the construction industry.

Australian building approvals fell 3.4% in April, marking a second monthly decline. Despite softer results, approvals remain 10.2% higher than a year ago, with detached housing showing resilience. Industry groups say strong demand, infrastructure investment and elevated housing needs continue to support long-term construction activity and supply growth.
