THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES

✒ Headlines & Industry

Queensland has extended the CFMEU Commission of Inquiry to late 2027 as allegations of bullying, intimidation, violence and corruption continue to emerge. Additional hearings and witness examinations are planned. The government says the extension will ensure all evidence is scrutinised while pursuing greater integrity, transparency, productivity and safety across construction.

Transgrid is proposing a ~$3.5 billion transmission upgrade in New South Wales to ease bottlenecks between renewable energy zones and major cities. The preferred option includes a new 500 kV line from Bannaby to South Western Sydney, with construction staged from 2030–2034, improving grid capacity and supporting electrification and future energy demand growth.

Victoria’s anti-corruption watchdog IBAC is set to receive expanded “follow-the-money” powers, allowing it to investigate taxpayer funds flowing through subcontracting and labour-hire arrangements in construction projects. The reform strengthens oversight of major infrastructure works and aims to improve detection of corruption and misuse of public funds.

🏗️ Projects

NSW

Major construction has started on Stage 1 of the Hillsborough Road upgrade in New South Wales, with Daracon Contractors delivering the works. The $35 million project includes duplicating 700 metres of road and upgrading the Crockett Street intersection with new traffic signals. The 18-month program aims to reduce congestion and improve safety along the Lake Macquarie corridor.

AI-driven demand for electricity is accelerating construction of new energy infrastructure, with Google, AirTrunk and European Energy Australia progressing a 25MW Mulwala Solar Farm in New South Wales. The project supports data centre growth by financing new solar generation, linking hyperscale digital infrastructure directly to renewable energy construction and grid supply.

Construction of Brisbane’s 2032 Olympic stadium at Victoria Park (Barrambin) is facing early-stage opposition from Indigenous groups and community advocates. Critics argue the project risks cultural and environmental damage, while supporters say it delivers essential legacy infrastructure. The dispute highlights tensions over approvals, planning exemptions, and large-scale urban development delivery.

NT

Construction is set to begin in September on Arafura Resources’ Nolan rare earths project, 135km north of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. The long-delayed mine will produce neodymium-praseodymium, targeting global supply demand. Peak construction will employ 600 workers before transitioning to a 350-person operational workforce.

QLD

Construction of Brisbane’s proposed Olympic stadium at Victoria Park is set to begin despite unresolved Indigenous heritage challenges. Opponents are urging a pause while federal assessments continue, warning of impacts on culturally significant land, waterways and mature trees. The Queensland Government says works will proceed as scheduled from June 1.

The redeveloped Brian Dorey OAM Capricorn Coast Aquatic Centre has opened in Yeppoon, delivering upgraded community infrastructure including a heated 50-metre pool, modern amenities, accessibility improvements and new filtration systems. Backed by $13 million in federal funding, the project strengthens regional sporting, recreational and community facilities for future growth.

A revised development application has been lodged for a 15-storey residential building at 99 Thorn Street, Kangaroo Point in Queensland. The proposal increases the project to 56 apartments, adds a basement level, revises parking and bicycle spaces, and includes façade and rooftop communal changes as construction design refinements ahead of potential approval.

VIC

Hepburn Shire Council has outlined a $10.5 million capital works program in its 2026/27 draft budget in Victoria, focusing on essential infrastructure upgrades. Works include road safety improvements, resurfacing, reconstructions, and pavilion construction across Daylesford and surrounding communities, funded through a mix of council funds, grants, and asset sales.

Victoria has formally declared six Renewable Energy Zones (REZs) in Victoria, including Gippsland, Western, North West, South West, Central Highlands and Gippsland Shoreline. The zones will coordinate solar, wind and battery projects, streamline transmission planning, and guide construction of new energy infrastructure as coal-fired power stations retire over the next decade.

🧰 Construction Au Other

Australia is investing heavily in renewable gas infrastructure, but progress remains limited. A new report argues that billions spent on green hydrogen and biomethane have yet to deliver scale, with production still minimal. It calls for stronger policy support, demand obligations, and investment certainty to accelerate construction of renewable gas facilities.

Opposition to Brisbane’s 2032 Olympics is emerging through disputes over Victoria Park (Barrambin), where Indigenous groups and community advocates are challenging the stadium project on environmental and cultural grounds. Supporters frame it as legacy infrastructure, while critics highlight heritage loss, planning exemptions, and competing visions for how major Olympic construction should shape the city.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

AI construction technology company LightTable has raised $22 million to expand its pre-construction workflow platform, which is designed to identify design errors before site works begin. The system uses AI to review construction drawings faster than traditional methods, aiming to reduce rework, delays and cost overruns across major building projects.

🌏 Around the World

Lendlease has agreed to sell development rights for the Milano Santa Giulia (MSG North) project in Milan for $250 million, advancing its capital recycling strategy. While the deal will generate a FY26 post-tax loss of about $175 million, it removes future development costs and capital commitments, strengthening balance sheet flexibility.
